Exploring the mental and physical benefits of Dry January
Today I was able to work with Bianca Ventura for Fox 40 News, on Exploring the mental and physical benefits of Dry January. Watch and take notes on ways you can work on your Dry January goals. Remember you can start at any time in the year.
Dry January is and has been a public health campaign that encourages people to abstain from alcohol for the entire month of January. It was initiated by Alcohol Change UK in 2013. It has gained global attention and is a stable in individual goals for the New Year. A lot of individuals see improved liver functioning and reduced anxiety and depression when they participate in Dry January. There is a struggle to complete this goal and that is the time where you should learn to utilize your tribe of family and friends to help you with your goal. You can attend a meeting of self-help community support groups like Alcoholics Anonymous for added support. If you are hosting an event, make sure that you offer non-alcoholic drinks for your loved ones and friends. Check in on family members as well who may be suffering from substance use and need added support.
Identify your triggers as well, high pressure events that may trigger you to use. Learn to say no. No is a complete sentence and it is ok to say No and or that you are taking a break from drinking. Frame in a positive light and seek support once again from your network. Focus on the benefits that will come from participating. Seek medical attention if you need to. Not everything will go perfectly, and you should seek to make small changes to get you to the finish line. Slips happen, what are the key steps you need to take to continue.
